To the common eye, in person at first glance, you can think the large Boerboel is either Intimidating or would make an excellent guard dog. You wouldn’t be too far off but then again what adult dog doesn’t possibly hold these traits. When I met my first fully grown South African Mastiff, even I was hesitant but amazed I was. This breed is well known for being loving, calm, and family-friendly, especially towards human children and to say the very least I haven’t met one yet that with the proper owner that has shown otherwise.
These Loving behemoths of a protector were bred to help farmers in South Africa defend their homesteads from hyenas, panthers, lions, and all other deadly wildlife. Nevertheless, all while also providing invaluable companionship and loyalty. The Boerboel is sometimes confusing to many and even hard to pronounce and annunciate since it is not a “common” dog to most. It is pronounced “boo-r-bull,”. Its name descends from Dutch/Afrikaans words that roughly translate to “farmer’s dog.” It is also known by other common names such as but not limited to the South African Mastiff, South African Boerboel, Boerboel, Borbull, or Bole mastiff. Although Boerboels are known to be naturally obedient, easy to groom, and come with few health problems, don’t make the mistake of thinking they’re an easy breed to handle for first-time
owners. These dogs have strong tendencies and can vary between being superiorly confident, territorial, prone to pulling, chewing, and even quite explorative given the chance especially Boerboel puppies. The South African Mastiff needs an assertive, patient, and experienced owner with plenty of space for a massive dog or Boerboel puppy that needs to exercise.
Taking on a Boerboel for a pet is an enjoyable opportunity I recommend to anyone truly open to it. If so, you defiantly want to puppy proof while you’re on a waiting list for your Boerboel pup. This dog is always in high demand so it’s best to use your free time to study up on your Boerboel puppy so that way you’re not in for too many surprises.
